Two things drive that down: bedrooms hold very little heat-producing equipment compared with a kitchen or a home office, and they are occupied mainly at night when the outside temperature has already fallen and there is no solar gain at all. Oversizing a bedroom unit is a real problem rather than a harmless margin. A unit with too much capacity cools the air to the set temperature quickly, shuts off, and never runs long enough to remove humidity, which leaves the room cold and clammy. It also short cycles, which is noisier and harder on the compressor, and noise matters more in a bedroom than anywhere else in the house. How many BTU do I need for a bedroom?
At 20 BTU/h per square foot, a 12 by 12 foot bedroom of 144 square feet needs roughly 2,900 BTU/h, and a large 200 square foot bedroom around 4,000. Most small window and portable units start around 5,000 BTU/h, which covers a typical bedroom comfortably.
Why is the bedroom rate lower than a living room?
Bedrooms contain almost no heat-producing equipment and are used mainly at night, when there is no solar gain and the outdoor temperature has dropped. A living room of the same size carries more occupants, more electronics and usually more glazing.
Is it bad to buy a bigger unit than I need?
Yes, for a bedroom in particular. An oversized unit reaches the set temperature fast and shuts off before it has removed much humidity, leaving the room cold but damp. It also cycles on and off more often, which is noisier and wears the compressor.
Should I count the people sleeping in the room?
