Tile Calculator

About Tile Calculator

Tile Calculator computes how many tiles are needed to cover a floor or wall area. Enter the area dimensions in metres, tile dimensions in centimetres, and a waste percentage (default 10% to account for cuts and breakage). Results show tile count in metric and imperial. Enter the number of tiles per box to also get the number of boxes to purchase. A 10% waste buffer is standard for simple rectangular layouts, while diagonal patterns or complex cuts require 15-20%. The box count field lets you enter how many tiles come in a box so you know exactly how many boxes to purchase at the store.

How to use Tile Calculator

  1. Enter the floor or wall area dimensions in metres
  2. Enter tile length and width in centimetres
  3. See tile count and optional box count in metric and imperial

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is waste percentage important?
Tiles break during cutting and installation. A 10% waste buffer is standard for simple rectangular layouts. Diagonal or complex patterns may need 15-20% waste to account for more cuts.
How is the tile count calculated?
Area x (1 + waste%) divided by single tile area, rounded up to the nearest whole tile.
Can I enter tile size in millimetres?
The tile size fields expect centimetres. For a 600x600 mm tile, enter 60 in both fields.
How many tiles do I need for a 3m x 3m floor?
A 3 m x 3 m floor (9 m²) with 60x60 cm tiles (0.36 m² each) and 10% waste needs ceil(9 x 1.10 / 0.36) = 28 tiles. Enter your exact dimensions in the calculator to get the precise count for your tile size.
What waste percentage should I use for diagonal tile installation?
Diagonal or herringbone tile layouts typically require 15-20% waste because more tiles need to be cut at angles along the edges. Use 15% for a simple diagonal pattern and 20% for complex patterns or small rooms with many corners.
